Convertible car seats are seats that can be used rear facing for a newborn and infant and then turned forward facing when the child reaches a certain age and weight.

Most Convertible Car Seats accomodate a baby starting at 5 pounds and hold a child in a harness restraint up to 40-65 pounds...depending on the make and model of the convertible car seat restraint.

When researching convertible car seats take into account your childs age, weight and height. Also be sure to take into account the size of the car seat and the size of the vehicles seat. Some convertible car seats, especially the models that go up to 65 pounds can be too big rear facing for some vehicles. Brands that have fit problems are the Britax Boulevard, Britax Marathon, Britax Decathalon, Sunshine Kids Manhattan 80, Sunshine Kids Radian, Recaro Signo and Recaro Como. All of these seats go up to atleast 65 pounds and 48 inches so are very long rear facing and can hit the back of the vehicles front seats.

Models that work better in smaller cars are the Briax Roundabout, and Britax Diplomat.
